As I was finishing up my last coloring (the all graphite pencil picture) I was also doing a lot of sketchpad drawing. And in the middle of all of the gray tones on my sketchbook pages, all of a sudden little dabs of color started to sneak in.

Part of that color play was with my Derwent Graphitint pencils. They are graphite pencils with a hint of color, and the color is water activated so that painting on top with water releases pretty washes of subtle color. But instead of using water this time, I just outlined or edged shapes with a bit of pencil and then used a blender pencil to smudge the part I colored over the white paper.

I thought that would be a fun way to color a coloring page, and I must say that I really like how this is turning out so far. I’m really not putting any thought at all into color selection because that hint of gray in each shade unifies everything and makes my color choices look way more planned than they actually were!

Smudging each little shape after coloring the edges is making this a very slow coloring. You can see two days worth of progress in today’s slide show, and I have a couple more days worth of photos to show you tomorrow. Perhaps this would be a really good time to change the title of this post to “Part 1” instead of “Day 1”!
