In today’s coloring, I’m back to using markers again – this time coloring from Whimsy (Angie’s Patterns – Volume 2). Marker coloring is a real comfortable style of coloring for me – so this is really nice after spending the past week working on my colored pencil shading skills.

It’s always fun to revisit my earliest books. I can remember so well how long it took me to get my lines to bend into exactly the shape I wanted. I think it’s fair to say that I’ve keep less than 10% of the individual lines that I draw. Even though my drawing hand is so much more confident and creating line work feels much easier now, I still hold onto the habit of being very critical of each line. The difference is that I’m now far more skilled at fussing over tinier and tinier things. 🙂

The true test of any line work is how it feels when it is colored. I can find myself getting so drawn into all of the bends and curves of this design. I love the way these tendrils have such a sassy and jaunty feel to them, and the supporting shape has a wonderful mix of coloring detail in it – a pointy corner, a graceful curve, and that little wavy edge.

I like my coloring designs to give me a lot of different ways to move my markers. Combined with a brush tipped marker, these bits of personality in each line and shape turn the experience of coloring into an endless exploration.

As I color this piece, I keep thinking of how many different ways I could go with the color scheme. But the lines and shapes quickly bring me back to the present moment enjoyment of just coloring and coloring and coloring.

(Today’s coloring was from Whimsy (Angie’s Patterns – Volume 2) colored with Copic Sketch markers.)
