It’s pretty rare that I plan out a color scheme in advance. Usually colorings progress much like this one.
First, some color in my marker box looks particularly fun at the moment. This time it was and intense pumpkin orange shade. Orange is often kind of an awkward color to use, at least for me, because I’ve heard so many different color rules that say orange doesn’t go well with this color or that one. Orange may be my most intimidating starting color. (Well, this week. That kind of thing changes around all of the time, lol.)
If I start with an awkward color, I immediately give up any hopes of harmonious or clever color combinations – and that’s quite freeing. No need to worry about anything, just pick shades that make me feel happy and let the pattern do all of the work of making those shades look like they work together. And look at that – they look totally pretty in kind of a beach umbrella sort of way. I have no idea what will happen next – but I’m pretty sure it’s going to look fine.
